Keep your hands supple in Harmattan

Simple things to care for your hands and skin in dry season

How to Avoid Dry Hands in Harmattan Season

The harmattan season is usually tough on the skin. The dry and cold weather can easily take out the moisture in the skin but part of the body that is hit really hard is the hand. Harmattan season leaves many hands dry and wrinkled; this is not flattering at all. One look at your hands and most people think you’re way older than you really are; that is, if you allow the dry season to run you over.

There are number of simple things you can do help your hands stay fresh and moisturized. In fact, these tips can help your skin and other body parts that are prone to damage like the feet.

Here are six simple tips for combating dry skin in Harmattan:

Have a hand cream handy

This is the period to carry a hand cream with you everywhere you go. This means that you’ll be able to apply it to your hands as many times as possible. You need this because your hands and skin will lose moisture quicker in this season.

Make sure you choose a product that has anti-ageing properties and is non-greasy.

Drink plenty of water

You need to stay hydrated in harmattan season and you need to do it from inside. This is very important to care for your skin properly. Drink as much water as possible – 8 glasses daily is often recommended. This will help you skin stay supple.

 Avoid hot showers

The harmattan season is the time to stay away from hot showers and baths. Yes, you probably want to use hot water so you can stay warm but it’s not good for your skin. Hot water dries out the skin; you’ll be better off using lukewarm or cold water.

You can keep yourself clean without taking a bath all the time. You can keep clean and get rid of the dust on your body washing more exposed parts like your legs, hands and face while you use wet wipes to clean other parts of your body.

Switch from soap

Most soaps dry out the skin and hands; during harmattan, it becomes more serious. A better alternative would be to use shower gels or creams that will not strip your hands or skin of moisture like soap. Make sure you choose a product that is moisturizing.

You can make this switch during the dry season and return back to your favourite soap once harmattan is over.

Invest in a humidifier

One of the best tips for harmattan is to get yourself a humidifier; you can use it to add moisture to the air in your home. This is because the air loses moisture in harmattan and the skin suffers for it.

Once you invest in a humidifier, you can use it for many years. If you can’t get one at your local store, you can order for it online; try Amazon.com.

If you don’t have a humidifier or can’t get one, you can make do with placing steaming bowls of water in your home or placing them close to your heaters. If you don’t have a heater, you can place a pot of water on a stove or coal-pot on very low heat. This way, the steam is released slowly and you can add some humidity to the air.
